Sam's Word of the Week - Monday 25th April, 2005

Walrus (n)

A large marine mammal, scientifically known as Odobenus rosmarus, of Arctic regions. They are related to seals and have two long, often yellow tusks, tough wrinkled skin, and four flippers. The Walrus is an animal of great reference by rock group the Beatles. The song “I am the Walrus” allowed this loveable mammal to gain some recognition worldwide. Walruses enjoy sleeping, sun baking, swimming and eating turnip chips.

Okay... Here goes...

Not only is a Walrus an artic (which is in North America!!) animal, but also "Walrus is a tool for interactively visualizing large directed graphs in three-dimensional space" (http://www.caida.org/tools/visualization/walrus/) (I don't know how to put links in, okay?!)

Um... Okay... Walrus report coming soon on my blog (http://kylierobbo.blogspot.com)

I have been thinking about walrus' (I think they should be walrii when they are in multiples...) this week... While doing accounts and statements and invoices, I have had walrii in the back of my mind, waiting for someone to say something random/unusual/anything about the creatures, and no-one has!! How disappointed am I?!?!?! And then asking people what they know about walrii/think of when they think about walrii (that didn't come out right) no-one has any clue!! I can't even think of something that you can use walrii for!! I mean, sure, you could catch one and keep it in your swimming pool if you lived in Melbourne - that is something you could use one for I suppose... But when it comes to designing "fashionable" sunglasses with red cellophane lenses, I am sorry, but a walrus isn't going to help you there...
I had to read this book in year 6, I don't even know what it was about... it had a blue cover (I think it was blue anyway..) It was the most boring book ever!! (Up there with To Kill A Mockingbird and Anne of GreenGables) but I have a feeling that it had walrii in it, or if it didn't, a creature very similar...
Burkie just told me that I should be in bed if I am trying to think of something unusual-ish about walrii...

I give this week's word "walrus" a score of:
3/10 for practicality
and
7/10 for randomity
and 8.6/10 for difficultiness

And now, I am thinking that a walrus is going to knock on our front door and ask to be let in because our house is the perfect tempreture for the walrus to live in.. (I am freezing here people!!)

I wonder if walrii sneeze? And do their eye's twitch when they are tired? (as they prepare to fill themselves with air so they can sleep vertically in the water...)

PS I should be paid per word...

PPS (totally unrelated to walrii) one of our neighbours is doing karoke [I never could spell that word]... Okay.. So maybe it isn't karoke... I just braved the tempretures to try and figure out what song it was, and it turns out that it isn't karoke, just muffled music... Just thought you might like to know that...
